Study Tours offer students a completely arranged Year 1 Observership program. It provides students with the opportunity to experience medicine in a unique inter-cultural environment with a small group of UQ medical students. During the course of each program students will be exposed to a variety of the medical disciplines and local health needs.

All students participating in a Study Tour will not be required to complete an additional 4 week Observership following the Study Tour. The Study Tour is a program run for the Year 1 Observership. 

Study Tour Dates: Study tours generally run November-December each year.

Costs: All costs associated with the Study Tours are the responsibility of the student, including the $200 program fee.

Eligibility: All year 1 students (excluding Ochsner students) are eligible to apply. 

Application process

  1. Applications open Monday 11th April 2016 and close Friday 13th May 2016 at 5pm (Brisbane time).
  2. Complete the online application form, describe why you would like to participated in the Study Tour, attach your curriculum vitae (CV) and attach evidence of French language level if applicable.
  3. Selection Process: Applications will be assessed by a panel consisting of two staff members from the SoM International Office and the MBBS/MD Director. Applications will be selected based on the Expression of Interest, and CV (and language level if applicable). If applications are of equal value they will be electronically balloted. 
  4. Students will be notified if they have (or have not) been selected by the 20th May.

France

Univeriste de Lille 2 is UQ Medicine's newest official partner and we're thrilled to be working with them. The city of Lille is less than an hour from Paris on the train, and easy to reach many other European destinations on the Eurostar.

Number of Students: 4 Students

Program: 4 weeks at Univeriste de Lille 2  21st November - 16th December 

Students are required to have equivilant to a Level B1 in French. 

Students will be given the opportunity to nominate their preferred disciplines and the clinical administrator at Lille will do their best to accommodate them.

Accommodation: Lille 2 has a couple of accommodation options for elective students, including:

  • The residence Châtelet is located close to the Faculty and the hospital. It is equipped with a kitchenette (sink, fridge, hot plates) and a bathroom. The monthly rent is about €255 (wifi included).The website is unfortunately in French.
  • The residence G. Lefevre is located in the city centre. The cost of this accommodation depends if you want a dorm room (€245: own kitchen but the showers and toilets are shared) or a studio room (€565: with your own bathroom).

Students are required to pay a bond (same amount as the rent) and to supply their own sheets, pillows, blankets and utensils.

Total estimated cost is $4,000, including:

  • Accommodation: $400
  • Flights + train: $2000

China

This is the School's longest running Study Tour, operating since 2011. This Study Tour is split across two Chinese partner institutions, Second Military Medical University (SMMU) and Capital Medical University (CMU).

Number of Students: 6 Students

Program: 2 weeks CMU (Beijing): 14th November - 25th November and 2 weeks SMMU (Shanghai): 28th November - 9th December 

Students will be exposed to a range of different medical disciplines at each  location, including Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Students will be given the opportunity to nominate their preferred disciplines and our partners will do their best to accommodate them.

Accommodation: These accommodation options have been recommended by the partner universities and have been used by Study Tour students in previous years.

Due to shared room accommodation on this tour the selected students will have an even number of males and an even number of females.

Brunei

The Study Tour to Brunei has been running for several years and is a great opportunity for students to experience the health care environment of one of our South East Asian neighbours.

Number of Students: 6 Students (3 males & 3 females).

Program: 4 weeks Brunei Darussalam Ministry of Health - 14th November - 9th December

Students will be exposed to a range of different medical disciplines across the 4 weeks. Students will be given the opportunity to advise of their preferred disciplines and the clinical administrator at Brunei will do their best to accommodate them.

Please note, Fridays and Saturdays are Brunei's weekend days. Students will start their placement on Sunday.

Accommodation: Accommodation is provided on the hospital site in Bandar Seri Begawan. The apartments contain 4 bedrooms and a shared sitting area, kitchen and bathroom.

Cost: All costs are approximate and are the responsibility of the student. Once applicants have been selected, group meetings will be arranged to discuss flight and accommodation options.

Total estimated cost is $2,400, including:

  • Accommodation: $120 (for 4 weeks)
  • Flights:$1000 (approx.)
