The Discipline of Surgery encompasses teaching and research activities with the aim of keeping students and researchers at the forefront of surgical practice. The Head of the Discipline is Professor Mark Smithers.

Location

The Discipline of Surgery teaches in hospitals affiliated with UQ Medicine's Clinical Schools. This includes teaching at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital; the Princess Alexandra Hospital; Greenslopes Private Hospital; The Mater Hospital; QEII; The Prince Charles Hospital; Redcliffe and Caboolture Hospitals; Ipswich Hospital; Rural Clinical School at Toowoomba, Rockhampton, Bundaberg and Hervey Bay Hospitals; and at our overseas clinical school at The Ochsner Clinic, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA.

Teaching activities

The Discipline of Surgery teaches students about surgical diseases, how they present clinically, how they are investigated, and the principles of management. Teaching covers the spectrum of surgical pathology including gastrointestinal surgery, breast and endocrine surgery, burns and trauma, plastic and reconstructive surgery, urology, vascular surgery, orthopaedics, ear nose and throat, head and neck surgery, and ophthalmology.

Research activities

Our academic staff are involved in the supervision of Research Higher Degree (PhD and MPhil) students. Study topics range from pure laboratory science to fully clinical studies.

Away rotations

Guidelines for Surgical Specialties away rotation

Students are permitted to split their placements into 3 blocks of 2 weeks (Ophthalmology Required), 2 weeks (Elective), and 4 weeks (Orthopaedics Required). These blocks can be completed at multiple host sites, or one host site and back at UQ.

Students must be aware that unless special consideration has been approved, if a placement block is split and still includes a UQ placement, the sub-specialty allocation must be adhered to.

Learning activities must be in line with the currently published ECP.
