IMPORTANT UPDATE - COVID-19

As you may be aware, the Australian Government has implemented a series of measures in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and at present, the situation remains very fluid. As a result, we are continuing to experience issues with the availability of hospital placements and this has a direct impact on inbound elective placements.

After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to suspend inbound placements until at least June 2021. We will continue to monitor the situation carefully over the next few months and will provide an update in relation to placement availability for the period July to December 2021 as soon as is practicable.

Please note that applications are NOT being accepted for 2021-2022 at this stage and students are advised to monitor this page for updates.

The University of Queensland’s (UQ) Faculty of Medicine assists visiting medical students with elective placements. The Faculty defines visiting students as those who are seeking to complete a medical elective placement whilst enrolled in a medical program at another institution (in Queensland, interstate, or overseas) at a hospital affiliated with UQ.

The elective placements are only available to students who have completed at least one semester of clinical training.   The placements are for electives only, and the Faculty is unable to provide summative assessments or formal teaching sessions as part of these electives. The Faculty however, may extend invitations for visiting students to attend tutorials.

Medical elective placements are available from mid-January until mid-November each year, with applications accepted no later than 6 months prior to the desired commencement date

Applicants are not permitted to contact hospitals or medical professionals directly to make elective placement arrangements.

UQ cannot guarantee the availability of clinical placements, and may not be able to source a place for every applicant.

Important Information for Queensland Medical Students

Students from Bond, Griffith, and James Cook Universities wishing to undertake an elective from the Gold Coast to Rockhampton must formally apply via the Faculty of Medicine. This is to prevent hospital departments from being overloaded with students.

Students from Bond, Griffith, and James Cook Universities will not be required to pay the application or placement fees.
