Headed by Associate Professor Ruth Hubbard, the PA-Southside Clinical Unit falls within the Metro South Health area, the major provider of public health services in the Brisbane south side, Logan, Redlands and Scenic Rim regions. We employ more than 13,000 staff who provide specialist heath care to a population of more than 1 million people, 23% of Queensland's population.

PA-Southside Clinical Unit is highly integrated with three Queensland Health hospitals:

  • Princess Alexandra (PA) Hospital -  one of three tertiary level hospitals in Queensland, providing care in most major adult specialties. The PA is nationally recognised for expertise in trauma management and organ transplants and is one of Australia's leading academic and research health centres.
  • Queen Elizabeth II Hospital - The Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Hospital is a medium metropolitan adult facility providing a range of inpatient and outpatient services and a 24-hour emergency department. The hospital's endoscopy unit is Australia’s most advanced diagnostic facilities and has the capacity to see more than 5,000 patients a year.
  • Redland Hospital - Redland Hospital is the major health centre for Redland City and Brisbane’s southern bayside suburbs. The hospital provides care in a number of specialties including general medicine and surgery, cardiology, emergency medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology, orthopaedics, renal dialysis and paediatrics.

Approximately 200 students from across years three and four of the medical program undertake clinical training at PA-Southside Clinical Unit every year.

Why PA-Southside?

  • Expertise: Queensland’s finest specialists, many of whom are leaders in their fields and work across both the public and private sectors.
  • Coverage of disciplines and specialties: The PA hospital is one of the two largest tertiary-referral hospitals in Queensland, providing state-wide services in spinal injuries, brain injury rehabilitation and renal and liver transplantation. It provides tertiary-level services in all areas of adult medicine with the exception of obstetrics.
  • Varied clinical settings: The Clinical Unit is integrated with three very different hospitals - the PA is one of Queensland's busiest, while Redland Hospital and QEII are smaller community hospitals, offering students a more inclusive learning environment. Smaller student numbers allow more time with the teaching team.
  • New teaching facilities at Redland Hospital: The facility houses three tutorial rooms, a student common area including kitchenette, meeting room and administration offices.
