Information for Onshore Domestic & International Students

The Ochsner Clinical School offers students the opportunity to experience a medical education from two world-class academic medical institutions: UQ Medicine and the Ochsner Health System in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Students who are not part of the Ochsner cohort (onshore domestic and international students) have the opportunity to apply for Year 4 placements at the Ochsner Clinical School. Placements are subject to availability. Please refer to Ochsner Clinical School Placements for details to apply.

Please refer to the information listed below for details specifically related to clinical placements at Ochsner.

    4. Compulsory immunisations

Ochsner Health System policy requires all students to provide evidence of the following health checks and immunisations:

    • TB - Mantoux or QuantiFERON Gold Test - Must be done within 12 months of your placement and must encompass the duration of your clinical placement at Ochsner.
    • Drug Screen - Must provide evidence of clean test (Non-DOT 789 Panel).  The results must provide a negative screen for the following drugs:  Amphetamines/methamphetamine, Barbiturates, Benzodiazepine, Cocaine, Creatinine, Extended Opiates, Hydrocodone, Marijuana, Methadone, Methylenedioxymethamphetamine – MDMA (Ecstasy), Phencyclidine, Propoxyphene.

Required process to be completed in Australia

In order to meet the drug screening requirement, students must present the QML Pathology Form to their preferred GP or to UQ Health Care at St. Lucia. This specific form must be used in order to receive the appropriate test. Students are also responsible for presenting this required form to QML otherwise the report will be inadequate. If a student presents to a GP without this required form, the student will not receive the appropriate report to satisfy the Ochsner program requirements.

    • The results of the test will go to the referring GP who will give the results to the student. It is the student’s responsibility to upload an official copy of the results via PlacementsThe report must have a stamp and signature from the GP.
    • The test must be conducted within 90 days of commencing at Ochsner.
    • Not all QML collection centres perform this particular test. QML collection centres are listed at On this site there is a dropdown box with all of the tests they carry out. Click on the test named “Occupational Urine Drug Screen Collections (UDS, Level 3)”.  A list of collection centres with location and opening times will come up. Students need to arrive at least one hour prior to closing time.
    • NOTE: If a positive result is found for any of the above listed drugs (or AUS equivalent), students must provide proof that this was prescribed legally by either providing a copy of the prescription or other medical documentation by the prescribing physician. In addition, students who may be taking a prescribed drug that may impair or cause drowsiness should be prepared to submit similar documentation.

Proof of Immunisations and Health Checks

Students accepted for a placement at Ochsner must provide proof of the above health-check requirements at least four weeks prior to the commencement of the clinical placement at Ochsner. Students must upload all documentation via Placements. This will show up as a To Do task on your home page. Click on the task or navigate to My Details and upload the documentation in the designated section. Any student who has not submitted ALL health-check requirements via Placements within the designated timeframe will be removed from the placement.

Flu Shots - Students going to Ochsner for Blocks 1, 2, and 6 (during the North American Winter, November - April) require up-to-date flu shots.  This will be administered by Ochsner Employee Health during Ochsner orientation week.
