Information for Onshore Domestic & International Students

The Ochsner Clinical School offers students the opportunity to experience a medical education from two world-class academic medical institutions: UQ Medicine and the Ochsner Health System in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Students who are not part of the Ochsner cohort (onshore domestic and international students) have the opportunity to apply for Year 4 placements at the Ochsner Clinical School. Placements are subject to availability. Please refer to Ochsner Clinical School Placements for details to apply.

Please refer to the information listed below for details specifically related to clinical placements at Ochsner.

    2. Travel during placements

The Ochsner Health System is driven by a mission to Serve, Heal, Lead, Educate and Innovate. Coordinated clinical and hospital patient care, all connected electronically to provide convenience for our patients, is provided across the region by Ochsner’s 29 owned, managed and affiliated hospitals and over 60 neighborhood health centers.

ALL clinical placements have travel built into their schedules and ALL activities are not held on the Ochsner Main Campus (Jefferson Highway in New Orleans). Travel to other Ochsner sites, as far as 160 kilometres, is required for all placements. Students are responsible for their own transportation. The Ochsner Clinical School is not responsible for transporting students and will not make any site assignments or curricular adjustments for individual students based on transportation preferences or needs.

It is important to note that public transportation in New Orleans is not as efficient as it is in Brisbane and other metropolitan areas throughout the United States. Several clinical sites are generally not served by public transportation or have limited service during the early morning and late evening hours which are often required when doing clinical placements. As a result, all students are strongly urged to have a valid driver’s license and access to a reliable means of transportation while at the Ochsner Clinical School. Students are strongly encouraged to prepare in advance and make plans to have their own mode of transportation.
